Antibiotic Resistance

Promoting the Judicious Use of Antibiotics

Recent studies have shown that Oregon, like most states, is facing a growing problem with antibiotic resistance in community-acquired pathogens. In response to this public health problem, health plans and professional societies, including OMA, are dedicated to promoting the judicious use of antibiotics in Oregon.

Oregon AWARE (Alliance Working for Antibiotic Resistance Education)

Oregon AWARE brings together physicians and other health care providers, health plans, community organizations, industry and academic institutions. Their goal is to promote careful use of antibiotics among physicians and consumers, and advocate four action steps:

  • Don't insist on a prescription for antibiotics to treat viral illnesses like colds or the flu.
  • Take prescribed antibiotics for the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.
  • Only take antibiotics under the supervision of a health care professional.
  • Don't use shared or leftover antibiotics to treat an illness.
