Oregon has made national headlines as having the second highest rate of opioid drug abuse in the nation; an alarming story to many who are involved in health care across the state. This statistic has been a call to action and OMA joined the growing statewide efforts to address this issue.

OMA Efforts

  • 2016 Legislation session win – OMA's HB 4124

HB 4124 aids Oregon's front line physicians in the fight to reduce opioid use by streamlining the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) withn their electronic health record system and increases access to Naloxone through pharmacists and social service agencies.

The bill does the following:

      • Streamlines use of the PDMP by allowing seamless integration into existing technology, eliminating the need for multiple provider logins.
      • Preserves the privacy and security of the information in the PDMP and ensures that only authorized users access the information from within their electronic health record systems.
      • Allows pharmacists to prescribe and distribute unit-of-use packages of Naloxone to individuals who have completed a naloxone training course.
      • Allows employees of social services agencies to administer unit-of-use packages of Naloxone on organization premises.
  • OMA forms Opioid Taskforce in Fall of 2015
  • Development of opioid policyCME
  • Modules, focused on opioid, are in the works
