Five Effective Strategies for Creating Safer Schools

February 9, 7:30 - 9:00 am
OMEF Conference Center
11740 SW 68th Parkway, Portland

Despite the best efforts of policy makers and educators, bullying has become a national issue affecting schools across the U.S. Harassment, cyber-bullying and violence are getting younger, meaner, harder to identify and more acceptable in youth culture.

Adults alone cannot prevent youth bullying, cyber-bullying and violence.  Research shows that they often miss the most subtle forms of mistreatment or don’t know how to de-escalate or de-fuse conflicts when they arise.

These issues negatively affect school climate, adversely impact academic performance and student health, and cost districts significant amounts of money and time.  School administrators face increasing pressure from their communities to address this growing problem.

The Oregon Medical Association Alliance and Community Matters invite you to a no-cost presentation by nationally recognized author and educator, Rick Phillips. His topic: Whole School Climate Change:  A Framework for Stopping Bullying and Creating Safer Schools.

Participants will receive:

• Latest information about school climate standards and benchmarks
• Recommendations to guide your school climate improvement process
• An audit tool to determine costs and losses associated with bullying
• Best practice strategies for reducing and preventing bullying

For more information on the guest speaker and agenda, please contact Nancy Doherty at (707) 823-6159 or nancy@community-matters.org. Space is limited, so please register as soon as possible to reserve a seat. We look forward to seeing you there.

For the past 10 years, Executive Director Rick Phillips has drawn on his experience as an educator to develop an effective, nationally recognized program, Safe School Ambassadors. This program empowers students to take an active role in creating a positive school environment. Rick will address critical district and school site challenges and present best-practice strategies for combating the growing epidemic of bullying.
