The OMA's 2013 General Membership Meeting was a Success
In April 2012, the OMA started the tradition of holding an Annual General Membership Meeting in the spring. The OMA’s 2013 General Membership Meeting, Poverty Stricken: Providing Care in Challenging Times, was a huge success. Our health fair served uninsured adults; we raised funds for medical and PA students and awarded $20,000 in sholarships.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors and donors for their generous support, without which we could not have held these successful events. Click the links below to learn more and see photos from the weekend:

On Friday, April 19, OMA staff, member volunteers and our great team of partners held the first annual Care Connection health fair to provide screenings, referrals, immunizations and educational materials to uninsured adults in Portland. Approximately 200 patients, some of whom traveled across the state, were served in some capacity, and everyone who showed up for care was treated. See a complete list of our partners and services provided here.
Friday and Saturday evenings were dedicated to supporting the next generation of physicians and physician assistants. One student from each of the state’s four medical and PA programs was awarded a $4,000 scholarship, along with a fifth ‘wild card’ scholarship winner, during the second annual Party in the Pearl. This year’s winners are:
- Pacific University School of PA Studies: Steve Barrett, a first year PA student
- OHSU School of Medicine: Shanley Deal, a third year medical student
- COMP-Northwest: Richard Holman, a second year medical student
- OHSU Physician Assistant Program: Karie Zweifel, a first year PA student
- Wild Card Winner: Dan Bruce, a first year medical student at COMP-Northwest
During a full day of CME on Saturday, April 20, local and national expert speakers and panelists discussed poverty’s impact on health and health care and how to treat poor and marginalized populations. The OMA’s officers for 2013-2014 were also installed, and John McAnulty, MD, a Portland Cardiologist, was honored with the 2013 Doctor-Citizen of the Year Award.
Frances Biagioli, MD, a Portland family physician, was installed as the 139th President of the OMA. Sylvia Emory, MD, a Eugene family physician, was installed as the OMA President-Elect. Other 2013-2014 officers are: Robert Orfaly, MD, Portland, Vice President; Nancy Hutnak, DO, Baker City, Secretary-Treasurer; Ralph Eccles, DO, Klamath Falls, Speaker; R. Bryan Bell, MD, Portland, Vice Speaker; Janice McCarthy, MD, Grants Pass, Member-at-Large; and Mark Fischl, MD, Salem, Member-at-Large. William “Bud” Pierce, MD, of Salem will remain on the Executive Committee as the OMA’s Immediate Past President.
A fundraising reception on Saturday evening featured a wall of wine, a paddle raise and an inspirational keynote address from bestselling author Jeannette Walls. Our first fundraiser for the newly-launched OMA Medical Scholarship Fund, the reception raised over $21,000. Learn more about the Scholarship Fund here.
Special thanks to our emcee for the evening, Frank King, "The Cardiac Comedian."
