OMA endorses the American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for Health Supervision of Children and Youth as an appropriate periodicity schedule for children's and adolescents' physical examinations.

Because school-based physical assessments were originated at a time when many schoolchildren had little or no access to routine health supervision by a qualified physician and because comprehensive health screening is seldom available in schools, parents should be encouraged to seek a source of continuing primary care for their children and adolescents.

OMA supports the concept of school-based health clinics and encourages physicians to participate in local efforts to establish them, recognizing that local autonomy regarding service choices should be respected and a good flow of information between providers and parents should be encouraged.
