Skin Cancer Prevention in Oregon

The OMA reinforces and advances its stance on skin cancer prevention such that the OMA endorses the ban of tanning bed use in all individuals under the age of 18 in Oregon, additionally requiring tanning facilities to register with the state and undergo regular inspection by the Oregon Radiation Protection Services Tanning Program as detailed by the current law. The OMA also supports the use of sun protective clothing and the application and use of nonprescription sunscreen by students in Oregon while outdoors. Finally, the OMA strongly recommends Oregon’s K-8th grade students receive skin cancer prevention education as part of physical education or equivalent class time, utilizing any of the free, widely accessible online curricula.

Adopted by the Board of Trustees, June 2018.
