Definition of Health Equity

The OMA advocates for the right to health equity. The OMA defines health equity as equitable access to health and healthcare, independent of race, nationality, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender orientation, disability/ability status, primary language, income, socioeconomic status, age, education level, geographic location, and/or residency status, or any other identity or group identification that has or can be used as a reason for inequitable health care access, quality, or health outcomes.

The OMA’s advocacy for health equity encompasses access to care, quality of care, and health outcomes, ensuring that no individuals are prevented from attaining their highest level of health. Addressing health equity calls for a collective effort from society at large, policymakers, public health organizations, and healthcare systems. It's essential to confront and rectify avoidable health disparities, acknowledge and redress historical and present-day injustices and inequities, and actively work to prevent the emergence of new disparities in health and healthcare.
