Telephone Consultation Codes

OMA affirms support for CPT codes 99371-99373, evaluation and management codes designated for telephone calls by a physician to patient or for consultation or medical management or for coordinating medical management with other health care professionals. Furthermore, OMA, through the AMA, seeks to obtain third party reimbursement for medical telephone codes that are reasonable, properly documented on the patient’s chart and for which the physician has previously examined the patient. In addition, OMA urges the AMA to continue to work with Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), third party payors and appropriate medical societies to establish criteria by which certain telephone calls would be considered separate services for payment purposes.
