Discrimination by Third Party Payors

OMA believes that Medicare and all other insurance programs should not discriminate by diagnosis against persons suffering from mental illness, and patients treated for mental disorders in any setting be subject to the same coinsurance requirements as applied to other Part B services (i.e., 20 %) under Medicare.

OMA should pursue legislation to repeal Section 1833(c) of the Social Security amendments of 1965, which limits Medicare payment for outpatient psychiatric services to 62.5% of approved charges.

Adopted at the annual House of Delegates, 1992.
Reaffirmed at the annual House of Delegates, 2011.
