Steroids (Anabolic Steroids)
OMA recognizes "that the overwhelming source of steroids used for medically inappropriate purposes is through illicit channels" and that "enforcement efforts must be enhanced in this arena." OMA also acknowledges "that it is appropriate that vigorous steps be taken to detect and reduce those limited instances where steroids are supplied for non-medical purposes through prescribing practitioners."
Adopted at the annual House of Delegates, 1989.
Reaffirmed at the annual House of Delegates, 2011.
OMA encourages the AMA to propose medical and public policy which will, to the extent that prescribing practitioners may contribute to this problem, serve to reduce the availability of anabolic steroids for purposes for which they are not medically indicated. OMA should develop educational programs intended to discourage the use of anabolic steroids by athletes, particularly teenagers and young adults.
Adopted at the annual House of Delegates, 1989.
Reaffirmed at the annual House of Delegates, 2011.
