OMA Statement on Draft Supreme Court Opinion
May 9, 2022
Last week, a draft Supreme Court opinion for the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case became public. Today, Oregon Medical Association President Mark Fischl, MD, issued the following statement on the leaked draft that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Long-standing policy of the Oregon Medical Association provides that the decision whether or not to perform an abortion rests solely with the patient and their physician. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, this is a direct attack and intrusion on the vital relationship between a patient and their clinician. Overturning this decades long policy will also rollback decades long work to provide access to safe and medically effective reproductive health to all patients.
The policy of the OMA, which has been reaffirmed and tested numerous times over the decades is clear; abortion is a safe medical treatment, and with informed consent, is a choice left to a patient and their clinician and should not be an issue left to politicization.”
